A local nurse and UK trained midwife, Rachel won the CSL Biotherapies Best Practice Award for Women’s Health. Her unique skills have led to improved access to women’s health services in the Cairns area. ... The response has been so strong she now has two other midwives supporting the service so more mums can be seen.

In addition to the midwifery support services Rachel also coordinates regular Pap smear services from the clinic. The Pap smear recall and reminder system has significantly improved Pap smear compliance in the local area and resulted in greater understanding of the importance of regular screening.

Anne Matyear, APNA President, said, “Rachel’s work is outstanding and exemplifies the role practice nurses can play in delivering high quality and innovative care to their patients. The role she plays in her local clinic ensures an excellent level of care which is respected and admired by her patients and colleagues.”

Rachel’s work stood out in a year that saw the highest number of nominations since the awards began.

...Rachel has been awarded $5000 by award sponsor CSL Biotherapies to expand her skill-set and professional knowledge. Previous recipients have used their prize to undertake work experience and education in both local and international locations such as Darwin and the United States.
